Book of Hours, Folio 47

Description

Book of Hours The Litanies. Text begins with the lengthy invocation to Holy Mary ("virgo virginum") followed by those to Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, Saint Raphael, all the Holy Angels and Archangels, John the Baptist, all the Holy Patriarchs and Prophets, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Andrew, Saint John, Saint James, Saint Phillip, Saint Thomas, Saint Simon, Saint Thadey (Thaddeus), Saint Bartholomew, Saint Matthew, Saint Mathias, Saint Barnaby (Barnabas), Saint Mark, Saint Luke and all the Apostles and Evangelists. The text and order of the invocations is idiosyncratic when compared to a standard Book of Hours. The invocation to the Holy Orders and Spirits is absent, Saint James and Saint John are reversed, Saint Thomas and Saint Phillip are reversed, Saint Simon and Saint Thaddeus have their order switched and come before Saint Bartholomew rather than after and Saint Luke and Saint Mark are reversed. Script is Gothic and starts below the first line. 14 lines on both recto and verso. The Ss and Os beginning each separate invocation are illuminated in red, blue and gold. The end of the invocations is indicated by red, gold and blue decoration. The margins are decorated with blue, red and gold illustrations featuring acanthus and rinceaux.
